DMX LED Tape Compared with SPI LED Tape
Both DMX512 and SPI addressable tapes offer unique advantages. Understanding their differences in signal, addressing and cost helps avoid specification mistakes.
When deciding between DMX512 and SPI addressable LED tapes, understanding the nuances of each protocol is essential.
Signal and Reliability
DMX512 balanced differential transmission resists electromagnetic interference and works reliably over long distances. SPI uses single-ended transmission, which is simpler and cheaper but more sensitive to noise and cable length.
Addressing and Scale
One DMX universe carries 512 channels, so about 170 RGB pixels per universe; larger projects use multiple universes. SPI addressing follows data order along the strip and can drive thousands of pixels from one output, but long runs need signal regeneration.
Cost
SPI tape and controllers cost less, which suits signage, retail decoration and residential projects. DMX512 costs more per pixel but reduces commissioning risk on large engineering projects.
